I think that we use SFX in TV and Film because the use of it helps to add to the depth of the audio and the overall piece - together with the visuals. Another reason is because it is hard to record the actual 'on set' audio and still have the same level of volume, control and power in post due to the other background noises and directors directions, safety announcers etc.
The main advantages of using SFX is that, when done properly sound amazing, incredibly realistic and hard for the common audience to actually distinguish the difference between sound that is put in Post and on set recorded sound.
